Gender stereotypes in educational texts: A comparative study of Indonesian and international primary English textbooks

Despite the claim that world is progressing toward gender parity, stereotyping continues to be a challenge for many countries, including Indonesia. This critical discourse study sought investigate if stereotypes (still) exist in English language textbooks (ELTs) utilized international and local (Indonesian) contexts. To this end, analysed visual texts portraying male female characters from student books of Chest 6 Let’s Go Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (FCDA) perspective. In terms representation responsiveness, both quantitative qualitative analyses revealed ELTs depict unequal portrayals. Furthermore, were identified educational documents under investigation two social settings, namely family occupation/profession. empirical research implies that, order achieve more equality education, textbook authors schoolteachers around should fully aware issues encapsulated documents.
